Miscellaneous USA Haul

I hope you don't mind me putting up another haul so soon but it's been a long time since I did a non-beauty haul and I picked up some things whilst on my holiday that I wanted to share with you. I'll start of with the clothing and a few things I picked up from Forever 21. First are just a couple of basic tops which are all I seem to wear lately. This khaki v-neck burnout t-shirt is a super soft fabric and I pretty much live in v-neck t-shirts as I think they go with pretty much everything and are a little more flattering than round necked ones on me. I know I'll get a lot of wear out of this because khaki is one of my staple colours for A/W. Also I picked up just a stretchy striped top with long sleeves which will be great for layering. You can't go wrong with simple stripes!

The best item I picked up is this real suede jacket, also from Forever 21. It's such a great fit on me and because it's real suede it'll hopefully be really good quality and last well through A/W. The tan shade will go with most things I own so look out for this in a lot of outfit posts over the next few months!

I picked up a mascara from Covergirl, a drugstore brand that a lot of American's talk about. The brush reminded me of Maybelline's The Rocket mascara but it was quite a bit cheaper so as a lot of my mascaras are getting low at the moment, I thought I'd give it a try. So far I quite like it- it adds a lot of length to the lashes without much clumping. I wouldn't say it's the best I've used but it's pretty good. This cute cranberry scented candle was an absolute bargain- $1! I love the scent- it's very warm and autumnal- and I though the cute jar would look nice in my university room which I move into soon. I've got quite a lot of decor items to make my room homely so I'll definitely do some sort of room tour once I'm all settled in.

I have the HTC One Mini phone which is a really good one and even after more than a year I still like it. However I'm pretty clumsy and have dropped it a few times (ok, maybe more than a few times but shhh) which means that some of the plastic edging has snapped off. I'd been sticking it back on with sellotape but decided to pick up some cutely coloured Washi tape to repair it with from now on. Admittedly it doesn't look like the sophisticated phone it once was but this tape is super cute and I'm sure I'll find lots of other uses for it too. Finally I picked up the Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Lotion which is a product I haven't used for years but the scent is absolutely beautiful and once I'd smelt it I couldn't go without it. I actually didn't bring a moisturiser on holiday with me (for some strange reason) so this helped to keep my skin soft and tanned, plus it's a lot cheaper in America than it is in the UK.

ASOS Shoe Wishlist

Ok let's talk about my show addiction- it's seriously getting out of hand. I clicked onto my saved list on ASOS and was shocked by how many shoes I had saved so thought I'd share my favourites with you. I'm loving the classic court shoe shape at the moment, although I don't own many pairs like this as I find them pretty uncomfortable if I have to wear them for an extended period of time. This embellished pastel pink pair and this holographic snakeskin pair are stunning and would really jazz up a simple evening outfit of jeans and a blouse. I also adore the leopard peep toe pair as I'm still pretty obsessed with this print! Also shall we talk about the cuteness of these fluffy sandals?! If only there was more of Summer left these would look so cute with some little high-waisted shorts and a cami top.

Moving away from the super girly shoes to something more edgy- I love these strappy heels with the block heel, perfect for toughening up a look. They'd look great with some skinny black jeans and a leather jacket. Now onto boots which are, let's be honest, one of the only things I like about Autumn/Winter. I love the pair top left- a twist on the classic chelsea boot with a pointed toe and textured faux leather- and I'm definitely considering picking these up as they'd quickly become my staple shoe for the next few months. The studded pair are a very similar shape but are a little snazzier and would jazz up a simple outfit but still go with most things I own. Much as I love this snakeskin pair by Hudson these are definitely a dream item, coming in at £135. I just think they're so eye-catching and would make my staple outfit of jeans and a t-shirt a bit more exciting. Let's see if I can snap them up in the sale!

Autumn Wishlist (Already?!)

I know it's technically still Summer but we haven't exactly been having the weather I'd been hoping for so recently I've been starting to think forward to Autumn. All the shops are beginning to get A/W stock in and I'm loving the whole vibe this season and I can't wait to slip my feet back into a pair of classic chelsea boots. I love these ones from ASOS because of the pointed toe and block heel which will smarten up any outfit. I can see myself wearing a lot of polo necks, especially as layers- one would look great under these super cute dungarees. I'm also glad to see that off-the-shoulder tops won't be going anywhere in a hurry. I think they're super flattering on all body shapes and this striped one has a real 70s feel that I love. I think simple tailoring is also going to be a big thing which is why I love this khaki pencil skirt- imagine it with a fluffy jumper and a tailored coat and it's a classy everyday look. I actually tried on this faux-leather gilet in New Look recently but opted to buy a faux fur one instead, but there's no doubt I'll be heading back to pick this one up too in the near future.

I'm pretty sure it's no secret anymore that I am an absolute shoe addict- I'm always coming up with some reason why I need another pair. These holographic platforms are simply stunning and would look amazing with so many outfits for a night out. Unfortunately at £65 I'm not sure I can justify them but I can dream! As I'm heading off to university soon I've been stocking up on homeware in order to make my new room a lovely place to spend time. I've been obsessed with Etsy lately and I've seen so much cute decor- I love these embroidery wall hangings, as well as banners and prints that will just make me smile when I see them. I'm definitely planning on doing a room tour when I'm all settled in so look out for that in the Autumn.

My First Tattoo!

As you may know, I recently turned 18 and I've known for a while now that I wanted a tattoo. I got this done a few weeks ago so thought I'd talk you through my thought process and experiences before and after having it done. None of my family have any tattoos, nor do they particularly like them, but it was important to me that I wasn't doing something that would upset my family or that I would regret. Therefore I was always open with my parents- I told them that I was serious about wanting one, showed them that I'd put a lot of thought into it and had done my research. Luckily they're fairly easy-going so they agreed that it was my body and if getting a tattoo was something that was genuinely important to me, then they would support my decision. This made it a lot easier for me, and although they perhaps don't love it, I'm glad that I didn't go behind their back and have it done.

Obviously a tattoo is going to be on your skin forever so I needed to get the design exactly right. I'd known for ages that I wanted a rose. Some people believe that all tattoos should have a really deep meaning behind them, but I disagree. I think it's totally OK to have a tattoo purely because you think it looks nice. My rose does have some meaning- my parents have been married for over 30 years and despite having a very basic wedding (as they couldn't afford much more at the time) I always remember my mom telling me that she had yellow roses as these are her favourite flower. Originally I was going to have the rose done in yellow but after doing some research of different designs, I decided just to stick with a basic black outline, and if I wanted to add colour or build other elements into the design later on, that could be done easily enough.

It took a lot of time for me to find the perfect design. I took photos of roses, browsed photographs online and even attempted to draw my own, and I combined all these elements into pages and pages of a notebook until I was happy. As you can see from the pictures, I went with the rose in the bottom right-hand corner of the paper which was a photograph I found online. What really drew me to this one was the simplicity of it- it had very little shading but the shape was clear and the leaves were a nice touch. I sent this photo to my tattoo artist who copied it out and re-sized it for me. I had the rose done on the top of my left thigh for multiple reasons- I knew that fleshier parts of the body would be less painful and I also wanted it in a position where I could cover it easily, but equally I could show it off when I wanted to.

Before going to get the tattoo done, I did as much research as possible into every detail of getting a tattoo including how to prepare for one on the day and the healing process. I knew I was going to have it done at the Tattoo Palace in Wolverhampton. It's probably the biggest tattoo studio in the city and has a really good reputation so I knew I'd be safe there and that it would be done well. I had really mixed reactions when telling people I was going to get a tattoo done. Some people were violently against it and thought I was mad, while others were really in favour of it. At the end of the day, you can't expect everyone to be a fan of tattoos, but they are a very personal thing to each individual and I think that people should respect other's views. It's like wearing make-up- some people wear a full face every single day and some people never wear it, but either way you should respect that individual's choices, whether it's something you would do or not.

On the day of getting the tattoo, I was incredibly nervous. I was worried that it would hurt too much, or that it wouldn't look exactly as I wanted. Before starting the tattoo artist asked me lots of questions regarding size and positioning to make sure it looked exactly as I wanted. I was shaking like a leaf but the artist really put me at ease by starting with a small section to show me what it felt like. He kept asking me how I was doing and explained exactly what he was doing so I was soon feeling a lot calmer. The pain was not like anything I'd ever felt before- I would describe it as a deep scratch but as the needle vibrates it also made my leg feel buzzy (if that makes any sense). The tattoo took less than an hour though so I would just say to anyone that is worried about the pain: the pain is temporary but at the end you get a piece of art that you carry with you forever so it's definitely worth it.

In terms of after care, I was advised to wash the area gently three times a day, applying a layer of Bepanthen cream afterwards. I was to do this for 3 days, keeping it wrapped in cling film the rest of the time. For two days afterwards I didn't go to the gym as I didn't want to stretch or irritate the skin, and I also kept it wrapped up while I showered and tried keep it as dry as possible- this is because the hot shower water could open the pores too much and allow some of the pigmentation out and also the power of the water could irritate the skin. After these three days I took off the cling film and was able to shower as normal, but I kept applying an unscented moisturiser throughout the day (I like Nivea Soft as it's gentle but really gets into the skin, plus it's super affordable). I noticed after a few days that the area began to itch- this is normal, as the tattoo forms a fine scab over the top, but it's important not to itch it otherwise you could ruin the design. The flakes of scab just come away by themselves when the tattoo has healed so if you see black flecks coming away from the tattoo when you moisturise, it's nothing to worry about.

The top left photo is immediately after having it done- as you can see it's a little red although I didn't really have any bleeding, and it was a little tender for a few days afterwards. The right photo is after about 5 days, so the skin is still a little raised in places where it is still healing, but otherwise this is the finished look. I'm super pleased with how it looks. I adore it and want to show if off as much as possible. I would definitely consider getting another done in the future (I'd like to add some words around the edge of the rose I think), but I won't rush into it as, not only are tattoos pretty expensive, I don't want to run out skin by the time I'm 20!

I hope this post might be useful to some of you that are considering getting a tattoo in the future. If I could sum it simple I would day: 1) don't rush into it, plan and do your research, 2) make sure it's exactly what you want and 3) remember that the preparation, pain and healing is temporary but the finished tattoo is forever.

DIY Floral Embellish Leather Clutch Bag

It's been a while since I've done a DIY post so I'm really excited to share this one with you. My sixth form leavers dinner is coming up at the end of the month, and I've had my dress for ages but I was struggling to find the perfect bag- they were either too big, or the wrong colours, so I decided to take things into my own hands and create my own! Here's how I did it:

I picked this plain pouch (real leather might I add!) along with a some fabric flowers in a variety of colours, both from eBay for a really good price. I always go to eBay for craft materials rather than craft stores because you can find much better bargains online. All I did was layer a couple of flowers up, then took a metal split pin through the middle. I then made a small slit in the bag, slotted the split pin in and bent back the prongs inside the bag. I just repeated this process all over, adding flowers all over until I was satisfied with how it looked. It was really just going with my instincts- I didn't have a plan for how I wanted it to look but I was really pleased with how it turned out. I only covered one side of the bag, although you could do both. It was so simple to do but I think it looks so great and you could use whatever colour bag or flowers depending on what kind of look you were going for.

I've also got a fair few flowers left, some of which I have attached to some hair grips which I think will look really cute as a way to tie the whole outfit together. Overall this project cost me less than £15 so I'm really thrilled as not only did I have fun doing it, but it's cheaper than buying a new bag from ASOS for example!

Red Nose Day at TK Maxx

Red Nose Day always comes around so fast- suddenly, everywhere I go I'm seeing things splattered with red. As someone who doesn't talk themselves too seriously, I'm all for looking a bit silly and having a laugh whilst raising money for a brilliant cause, but every year TK Maxx give you the opportunity to look fab while doing it.

This year, as ever, they've got some great designers to contribute to their range of t-shirts available to buy online and in store, including Karl LagerfeldMatthew Williamson and Diane von Furstenberg. I'm definitely a jeans and t-shirt girl most of the time so one of these with some black skinny jeans and a jacket would be an ideal look for me and I cannot wait to get my hands on one. As well as being really reasonably priced at around £15, at least £5 of this goes directly to the charity.

There's more too- Henry Holland and Anya Hindmarch have designed some tees that you can get for your kids and that man in your life, along with some snazzy items for your home. I would definitely recommend taking a look at what's on offer and picking up a bargain, as well as supporting a brilliant cause. Also pop in to your local store- there's some great fundraising events going on up and down the country (in my local store staff are putting on events every week until Easter to raise even more cash) so get supporting!

Party Guide // Formal

This is the final post in my 'Party Guide' mini series so I thought I'd make it a big one! This dress is gorgeous and perfect for a formal do without being too over-the-top. These chunky black heels from Office contrast the formalness of the dress, but teamed with some cute gold jewellery it really works. This bracelet is very cute with little elephants on it and adds an interesting element.

Have you enjoyed this party series? Be sure to let me know what you're wearing to your Christmas parties!

Party Guide // House Party

A house party seems like a really casual event so you need an outfit that you can be comfortable in and this one seems perfect. I love these shorts- the coated-look gives them the appearance of leather, and I think you could wear them with some tights and a blouse for a daytime look. These shoes would be super comfy so perfect for if you're going to dance! I really do like this bracelet because it takes away the hassle of trying to decide which bracelets to put together.

Winter Accessory Essentials

I was really looking forward to winter this year- big warm jumpers, a cute coat and darker make-up, but I forgot how cold it actually would be and now I just want spring to come around quickly! However, today I want to share with you my favourite accessories and things that I know I'll be wearing a lot in the coming months.

Boots: for most people, boots are a must have for winter to keep your feet snug. I love them because you can wear big fluffy socks inside and no one has to know. This year I'll be wearing these simple black chelsea boots which I got from eBay and this slightly heeled pair from River Island.

Chunky Necklace: I love chunky necklaces as they can easily be thrown on over a simple jumper and can just give your outfit a little bit of glamour. Both of these necklaces can add a big impact to an outfit and can make it look a bit more put-together.

Fur: faux, of course. I love to attach a fur collar to my leather jacket as it keeps me extra warm and can look quite glam. This brown one is from H&M and the burgundy came from Forever 21.

Gloves: I adore these gloves from River Island. These are a couple of years old now but they bring in new styles every year and are really great because you can have them as fingerless gloves or mittens- plus the face on them is so cute and people are always admiring them.

Scarves: of course, a scarf is an essential for winter, not only for keeping warm but also for being a great addition to an outfit. I feel like every fashion blogger has a tartan scarf at the moment but they are just so on trend right now is this big one keeps me very warm. I also love my burgundy snood from Topshop because I can just throw it on with anything and it's very snuggly.

Hats: I've always loved hats and winter is the best time to wear them. This monochrome bobble hat is from Primark and it really warm. But for something a little more fun I picked up these other two hats from eBay- they have the cutest cat ears in them and come in a huge range of colours.

Dark Lipsticks: most beauty bloggers are raving about dark lipsticks at the moment. I love to wear them with a slick of black eyeliner and a matte complexion. My favourites are 127 'Mulberry' by GOSH, L'oreal Glam Shine in 'Milady' and Sephora's 23 'Crush'.

Have you got any essentials for this time of year?

Party Guide // Night Out

This outfit is perfect for a girls night out- maybe getting drinks or going for a dance. It's a relatively simple outfit with the only accessories being these metallic pointed heels which are very classy, but the dress is so sparkly that is really doesn't need much else. Finish it off with a swipe of a cute pink lipstick, maybe a light smokey eye and an casual updo and you have a winning party look.

Party Guide // Work Party

You know what they say: "the party season is upon us". In the run up to Christmas, there seems to be an abundance of parties to hurry off to (at least for some people) so I've got four posts coming up for you showing four different outfits that I would wear to different events. First up, a work party.

I love that the trousers are pretty yet the top is so glamorous, it's a great mix. With simple heels and some sparkly accessories this makes for a perfect outfit for a smart meal out. If you feel you need to cover up some more you could always add a leather jacket or even a sheer kimono. Of course, this outfit would also work for many occasions, maybe a family party and you could even dress it down by trading the heels for some t-bar black flats like these from ASOS.

What are your thoughts on this outfit? Have you got any plans for a work party?

Little Black Dresses

You know how it goes- every girl needs a little black dress in their wardrobe. Well, in my case, I actually have quite a few. I bought my first almost two years ago and have been hooked first. They are very versatile, you can pair them with a wide variety of accessories and work for almost any occasion. Today I thought I'd share my LBD's with you so I hope you enjoy! As always I'd love a follow via GFC- just click the button on the right to make my day!

This dress I bought from Topshop about this time last year for my holiday and I love it- it's not quite a skater shape but I love the nice tight fit on top and the little cap sleeves. The monochrome print is bang on trend right now too and this is a perfect for a night out with a red lip and some black heels.

This is one of my favourite dresses that I own- I've worn this so many times, I bought it back in 2011 in a size 4 but I can still squeeze into it! It has a gorgeous cut-out detail around the neckline and an oval cut-out in the back which I love. Unfortunately the zip at the back is broken but I can still get in done and undone.

I bought this one from River Island when I bought the monochrome one last year, and I love this too as it has black lace but it has sheer lace panels too, around the waist and on the back. I also love the sweetheart neckline as it is very flattering, as is the bodycon shape.

This is my most recent LBD purchase from earlier this year. It's a simple midi dress which can be teamed with so many different accessories. It can be quite a smart look but you can also dress it down and I love that is is so versatile. Here I'm wearing it with an apricot denim vest from New Look and my bracelets are from eBay and Primark.

Finally is this quite formal black dress that I picked up for a bargain price in the House of Fraser sale after the summer last year. It's so simple, it has a stretchy bodycon layer and then a sheer skirt over the top and I love how feminine it is. It looks fantastic with a pair of kick-ass heels.

Joni Jeans

Joni Jeans are something I've been meaning to talk to you about for a while now (I bought them about a month ago so thought it was about time I told you about them). Joni jeans are a newish addition to the Topshop jeans range and are a take on the Leigh jeans which you probably know are my favourites jeans EVER!

The Joni jeans are basically full length, high-waisted jeans and I adore them. They come in quite a few colours and also are available in the tall and petite ranges. I have them in the colour 'Indigo' I believe. They are slightly different material to the Leigh jeans- a little thicker and more 'jean' like is that makes any sense (if you know what the Leigh jeans feel like, they're very soft, and hardly feel like jeans at all, whereas these are thicker).

They are super high-waisted on me, they come up to my belly button at least which is great. They add a great 90s feel to any outfit and I love to wear them with crop tops because it makes me feel like I'm showing off less flesh which is good at this time of year!

I think the only thing I dislike about them is that they tend to loose their shape around the knees quite easily. What I mean is that if you say, sit down for a long time they stretch around the knee and become bigger which can be a bit annoying but once you wash them they go perfectly back into shape.

What surprised me about these is that they are actually cheaper than Leigh jeans even though they have more material- they cost £36 which I guess is still quite pricey but I swear by these jeans, god knows what I'd be wearing if I hadn't found Topshop jeans! They are the only jeans that seem to fit me perfectly and I love all the different styles.

Check out the range of Joni jeans here.

Finding the Perfect Dress

So it's finally time- prom is on my mind. For me, prom is quite important, it's the first chance I've really got to properly dress up very formal, and  feel like a princess for the day (sorry, but it's true!). Prom can be quite a stressful time for a lot of people, looking for your dress in particular. Now I bought my dress recently and I think I did quite well with it, so here are some helpful tips to help you find your perfect dress:

Find a dress shop
For me this was so useful. I found a shop not far from where I lived that stocked bridesmaids and prom dresses and I went in there, and spent a lot of time trying on dresses, just to get an idea of what colours and what styles suited me. When I was in this shop I fell in love with a dress but it was so expensive I just couldn't buy it.

Go in with an open mind
So this I think is a pretty important step. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, but when I trying on dresses the ones that I liked best were actually completely different to what I originally wanted. Don't be too set on what you want, because you may try it on and be dissapointed.

Shop around
As I said, I fell in love in with a dress in store, but it was far too expensive for something that you are not likely to wear many times again! So later that day, I went onto the internet and there are so many different prom dress websites. I basically looked through a lot of dresses, and I managed to find one that I loved for a really cheap price.

Go with what colours suit you, not what you like
Ok, I don't mean it exactly like that. Obviously you have to like the colour of the dress you are wearing, but there may be some colours that don't suit you. I love dresses in peach and gold colours but they just do not suit my skintone as they make me look washed out. Instead, brighter colours tend to suit me more, so you've got to bear that in mind when buying a dress. Yes, it may be a lovely dress but if it doesn't suit you then what is the point? Also a lot of dresses can be made in a lot of colours, so don't worry if the photo of the dress is in a colour that doesn't suit you.

Get yourself measured
Either by a professional, or just by getting your mum to do it, make sure you measure yourself, so you can get the best fit of your dress. Once you've measured yourself, you can compare it so the size guide to find what size will fit you best, and often you can put these measurements in and they will custom make it to fit you. One thing I will say is that it's better to buy a dress that will be slightly to big, so you can take it and get is adjusted and made smaller, rather than one that is too small and you can't fit into.
